In a significant move toward digital transformation, Google Pay has officially launched in Lebanon, thanks to a strategic collaboration between Visa and Google. This new service allows Lebanese consumers to make seamless, secure, and contactless payments using their Android smartphones and Wear OS smartwatches.
A Milestone for Digital Payments in Lebanon
Starting today, Visa cardholders from BLOM and BLF banks can add their cards to Google Wallet. This enables quick and easy payments at any terminal that supports contactless technology, whether at restaurants, retail outlets, or transit stations. More banks are expected to follow in the coming weeks.
- âś…Supports Android and Wear OS devices
- âś… Works at any contactless payment terminal
- âś… Expanding to more Lebanese banks soon
This launch arrives at a time when Lebanon is ready to embrace mobile-first solutions. With 91.6% internet penetration and over 4.7 million mobile broadband subscribers, digital readiness in the country is among the highest in the region. The widespread use of smartphones makes it an ideal moment to introduce modern payment options like Google Pay.
Built for Security and Simplicity
Security remains a top priority. Google Pay uses tokenization, a technology that replaces sensitive card information with a unique, device-specific cryptographic token. This token, along with a dynamic security code, ensures that every transaction is secure and cannot be reused.
- No card numbers stored or shared during transactions
- Each payment protected with a one-time-use token
- Enhanced protection for both online and in-store use
This means Lebanese users can tap and pay with peace of mind, knowing their data stays private and protected.
A Word from Visa
Mario Makary, Vice President and Country Manager for Visa in the Levant, highlighted the importance of this rollout:
“We’re thrilled to strengthen Lebanon’s digital payments journey through this partnership with Google. With mobile penetration surpassing 80% and rising demand for cashless transactions, this launch supports Visa’s vision of creating a secure, convenient, and inclusive payment experience.”
Visa continues to drive similar initiatives across the region. Lebanon now joins other markets, including Jordan, in moving toward mobile-first ecosystems where physical cards become optional.
A Look at the Bigger Picture
This move reflects more than just a tech upgrade, it’s part of a broader effort to boost financial inclusion and economic efficiency. With more people able to access and use digital payments, Lebanon is moving closer to a cashless, connected economy.
