The Challenge

Imagine a world where a sudden flood or earthquake strikes. For most people, a quick glance at their phones provides crucial warnings. But for millions of hearing-impaired individuals in Pakistan, these vital alerts remain invisible. This digital divide puts them at increased risk during emergencies. The ConnectHear app will now have a feature giving out disaster alerts.

ConnectHear app — Bridging the Gap

Enter ConnectHear, a Pakistani startup on a mission to change that. Their innovative app is designed to break down communication barriers and ensure the safety of the hearing-impaired community during natural disasters.

How the ConnectHear app Works

  • Sign Language Alerts: ConnectHear translates critical emergency warnings into clear, concise sign language videos, making vital information accessible to all.
  • Real-Time Support: Users can connect directly with sign language interpreters via video calls for live updates and support during emergencies.
  • Offline Access: The app is designed to function even in areas with limited internet connectivity, ensuring that vital information reaches those who need it most.

A Collaborative Effort

ConnectHear isn’t tackling this challenge alone. They’ve forged strong partnerships with key players:

  • PTCL and Ufone: Providing free access to emergency alerts for registered users.
  • HANDS Pakistan: Training field staff to effectively disseminate information to the hearing-impaired community.
  • GSMA: Offering technical and strategic guidance to scale the initiative’s impact.

Beyond the App

Recognizing that not everyone has access to smartphones, ConnectHear is implementing a multi-pronged approach:

  • Community Outreach: Training NGOs to deliver emergency alerts in person to those with limited digital literacy.
  • Alternative Communication Methods: Exploring and implementing alternative communication channels tailored to individual needs.

“This is more than just an app; it’s a lifeline,” says Arhum Ishtiaq, Co-Founder of ConnectHear. “By empowering the hearing-impaired community with the information they need to stay safe, we’re building a more inclusive and resilient future.”

A Step Towards a Safer Future

ConnectHear’s initiative represents a significant step forward in inclusive disaster response. By leveraging technology and community partnerships, they are demonstrating the power of innovation to address critical humanitarian challenges and create a safer, more equitable future for all.
